Abstract

Recently, the genus Salvia L. comprises about 900 (-1100) species mainly distributed in the tropics, there were 8 Salvia species recorded in Vietnam. In this paper, we reported Salvia japonica Thunberg newly recorded for the flora of Vietnam.

The Salvia japonica is anmual plant, that has stems erect, 40-60 cm tall, sparsely villous or subglabrous. Leaves 1-2-pinnate; petiole 7-9 cm long; leaf blade 6-13 × 5-11 cm; upper stem leaves 1-pinnate, under stem leaves 2-pinnate, short petiolate; terminal leaflet lanceolate or rhombic, pilose or glabrous, base cuneate, margin obtusely serrate; lateral leaflets ovate-lanceolate, 1.5-5 × 1-2.5 cm, base obliquely rounded, apẽ acute. Verticillasters 2-6-flowered, in terminal panicles; rachis densely glandular pilose and pilose; bracts and bracteoles lanceolate, glabrous, margin entire. Calyx tubular, 5-8 mm, sparsely glandular pilose and pilose, white hirsute annulate on throat inside, 2-lipped; upper lip nearly tooth, under lip ưith 2 acute lobes. Corolla bluish or white, ca. 1.0-1.5 cm, densely villous and glandular pilose; tube pilose annulate inside; upper lip 2 lobes or crenulate, lower lip 3 lobes with large mid-lobe. Stamens 2, filaments ca. 6-8 mm long with appen and tomentosa at the base; ovary glabrous, style as long as stamens or more, 2 lobes at apex. Nutlets brown, ellipsoid, ca. 1.5-1.7 × 0.5-0.6 mm.

Is close to S. miltiorrhiza but differs from the others by stem without glandular; apex of leaf acute; bractea glabrous; sepal with tomentosa line in inner, fruit with 1.5-1.7 mm long.

Voucher specimens were collected in Vinhphuc province (Tam Dao national park), deposited in the Herbarium of the Institute of Ecology and biological Resources, Hanoi, Vietnam (HN) and herbarium of Vietnam Museum National (VNMN).
