A study on effects of organic compounds on the growth and development of Paphiopedilum delenatii in vitro

Abstract

The addition of organic compounds into the basal media in vitro enhanced the metabolic process of slow growing plants. In this study, effects of three different groups of organic compounds, including (i) the group of banana homogenate (BH), potato tuber sections (PTS) and coconut water (CW); (ii) the group of peptone, triptone and yeast extract powder; and (iii) the group of spirulina algae on the growth and development of Paphiopedilum delenatii in vitro were investigated. The results showed that all three groups stimulated the increase of shoot number, especially spirulina algae not only stimulating the formation of the number of multiple shoots but also increasing the survival rate of Paphiopedilum delenatii in vitro. For the experiment of BH, PTS and CW, the highest number of shoots (3.8 shoots/explant) was obtained on the medium supplemented with BH at the concentration of 20 g/l. For the experiment of petone, triptone and yeast extract powder, the highest number of shoots (3.9 shoots/explant) was obtained on the medium supplemented with yeast extract powder at the concentration of 1 g/l. For the experiment of spirulina algea, the survival rate of explants was 100% at all concentration and the highest number of shoots (4.0 shoots/explant) was obtained at the concentration of 50 mg/l.
